Class Wiki so far

The class wiki is very exciting to me because this is the first time in my life that i participate and contribute to one. I chose to create a Health care and New Media page and so far i have been able to add interesting articles about how new media is changing the Health care industry. I have also added links to different medical websites and blogs. I have contributed something every month since February up to the end of march. By the way on March 29 I added something on New Media and Entertainment page. It has been fun and educational because by looking for new information to add I have learned something new every time.

ADVICE TO BARUCH COLLEGE

I am pretty satisfied with the level of new media available at Baruch for us students to register, change out major or see our degree progress but there are two suggestions i would like to make:

-I would like to be able to apply for my student loan completely online. Every year I still find myself standing in a huge line outside Financial Aid Office to fill the application there.

and

-All professors without exceptions should use at least one form of new media to communicate with students. There still are few who don't.

Modeling Reality and Virtual Worlds

The use of new media has become a never ending necessity to survive in the global society we live in today. From the smallest mom and pop shop to President Barack Obama twittering with us throughout his presidential campaign, we all realize how a important a role new media plays in our daily lives and how useful has become.

New media technology has become indispensable to transact business with a more global approach, for fast and reliable communication, in the arts and entertainment industry, education, politics and many more. It is one of the greatest advances of mankind without a doubt. Moreover new media is always in the quest to find new ways to accommodate the consumer's needs. However, there is always the downside to great things.

virtual communication world can be dangerous if misused. I know of people who have used social networking site to commit crimes. I know for a fact that in May 2008 a married couple who are exotic dancers lured 2 girls of 13 and 14 years of age to their home in queens were they were sexually abused by both of them and taken to a exotic dancers club were they were forced to dance for the clients. They use my space.com to make contact with the girls appealing to their impressionable young age and convinced them to run away from their homes to this awful situation. Now both of them are sentence with 8 and 6 years of prison. The girls were found alive but who knows in what emotional condition.

My believe is that if we practice caution of what information we released out there in the cyber world, the technology can be enjoyed more and reap the benefit in more ways than imagined.

Checking out some social networking sites

Currently I am a member of Facebook and Hi5. I checked myspace.com today. They all have pretty much the same features such widgets, applications to be downloaded, privacy settings, broadcasting, etc. What is different to me is the age group to which these sites cater too. I noticed My Space.com and Hi5 are populated mostly by teenagers and young adults while Facebook seems to be more adults between 25 and 40 years old. I dislike that some of these teenagers or young adults even the adults like to upload inappropriate pictures or say inappropriate things. Other than that they fulfill the purpose for what the sites are needed. My favorite site is Facebook just because all my friends are there.

Definition of New Media

I believe new media is the transformation of our old media into a a highly versatile version that has allowed us to become totally globalized. Speed and interactivity have been key to successfully communicate with the anybody or anything around the world. Our old media as clever and ingenious as it is was not able to reach this heights.

Term Project Description

As you know my project topic is on folksonomy. My presentation will include an analysis of folksonomy origins, purpose, how to use it, is it useful or not and maybe real testimonies from actual users if i find them.

Term Project Topic Possiblities

After some thought and research, I'am between 2 possible choices for my term project. Some aspect in Folksonomy or Social Networking and loss privacy which is more specific. By tomorrow i should have made my decision once i speak to Prof. Friedman. I would like some input
